Question based on Average

A batsman in his 17th inning makes 85 scores and thereby increases his average by 3. His average after 17th inning is?

Solution:

Let x be the average of that batsman after his 17th inning
according to the question, the average of batsman after his 16th inning will be (x-3).

According to the basics of average we know that Average = Sum/ No. of entries
This means that:

Average of 17th Inning  x = 16x3+8517

On solving we get x=37 which is his average after the 17th inning.
